Bliss in Every Direction: Our Bali Escape

Bali had been on my list for years, but when we finally made the trip, it offered more than just beaches and beauty - it gave us space. Space to slow down, reconnect, and just be for a while. It’s a place that moves at a different pace. One that invites you to exhale and lean into something softer.

We split our time between the lush interior and the coast, taking in everything from jungle temples to sea-view sunsets. Here’s a glimpse into our Balinese escape and why it’s a place I so often recommend for those craving something truly restorative.

Ubud: Jungle Calm + Cultural Heart

We began in Ubud, often called Bali’s spiritual heart and it absolutely felt like it. Wrapped in jungle and rich with culture, it was the perfect place to land after a long flight. We stayed at Maya Resort & Spa, a peaceful retreat nestled in greenery. The forest views were incredible, and the spa, perched above the river, was hands down one of the most serene I’ve experienced.

There’s a slower rhythm in Ubud. Mornings often began with birdsong and mist hanging over the valley, followed by fresh fruit breakfasts and long, quiet walks.

While there, we visited the famous Tegalalang Rice Terraces. They’re every bit as beautiful as they look in photos, all curves and green layers and even during the busier parts of the day, there’s something calming about standing among them.

We also stopped at Tirta Empul Temple, known for its sacred water purification ritual. While we didn’t go in, it was moving just to observe. There’s a real reverence in the air.

Into the Highlands: Waterfalls, Temples + Winding Roads

From Ubud, we headed north for a deeper dive into Bali’s highlands - a day of winding roads, misty hills, and moments that left a mark.

Our private driver was friendly, skilled… and swift. The roads up to Lempuyang Temple - also known as the Gates of Heaven - were steep and narrow, with sharp corners and sheer drops. It was safe, but definitely not for the faint of heart.

When we finally arrived, Mount Agung was hidden behind thick fog - no majestic mountain view for us. And while the temple complex itself is beautiful, there was a bit of an Instagram vs. reality feel to the experience: queues, staged photos, and a definite tourist conveyor belt vibe. That said, the photos were absolutely worth it, and we still talk about the surreal atmosphere up there.

We also visited Tirta Gangga, a former royal water palace filled with koi ponds and stepping stones. Much quieter, and a lovely contrast to the temple crowds.

To the Coast: Sunset Rituals in Seminyak

After our time in the jungle, we made our way to the coast for some much-needed beachside stillness. We chose Seminyak, drawn by its relaxed energy and reputation for good food, better sunsets, and a bit of barefoot luxury.

Our time here was wonderfully unhurried: long afternoons by the pool, salty air walks, and evenings that always seemed to lead us back to Chez Gado Gado. We spent multiple nights there, watching the sky turn gold and orange over the sea, glass of wine in hand, just soaking it all in. It became a kind of ritual - the perfect close to each day.

A Few Things We Learned

  • Buy alcohol at duty-free before you arrive. We didn’t, and quickly realised our mistake - prices in Bali are high, even in bottle shops (think £60 for a bottle of gin). Everything is imported, and it adds up fast.

  • Bring a sarong. It’s a must for temple visits, and also handy for layering, lounging, or dressing up an outfit.

  • Early mornings are special. Whether in the jungle or by the beach, there’s something sacred about the stillness before the island fully wakes.
